Neurology & Neurosurgery research at Saint Luke's
The research department serves the neurologists, neurosurgeons, advanced practice providers, trainees and staff of Saint Luke's Health System in Kansas City, Missouri. Our clinical programs are part of Saint Luke's Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute, and our research office supports investigators from first idea through IRB approval, data collection, analysis and publication.
Department leadership
The three leaders above form the research leadership team and administer the Research Hub. Access requests go to this team, and any one administrator can approve them — you do not need sign-off from all three. Requests are usually reviewed within two business days.
Why we do this
Our mission is to improve the lives of people with neurological and neurosurgical conditions by generating evidence from the care we deliver, sharing it openly, and training clinicians who think like scientists.
Rigor
Prospective data, pre-specified analyses, IRB oversight and transparent reporting. Registries are designed before the first patient is enrolled.
Patients first
Research questions come from the clinic. We prioritize outcomes that matter to patients and families — function, independence and quality of life.
Collaboration
Neurology and neurosurgery work as one department, alongside nursing, rehabilitation, radiology, pathology, pharmacy and biostatistics.
Mentorship
Every project is a teaching opportunity. Trainees are authors, not observers, and learn the full arc of a study.
Stewardship
Patient data are handled under institutional policy and federal regulation, with access limited to approved personnel and protocols.
Openness
We publish what we learn, including negative results, and make our documentation and processes available to the whole department.
How research works here
Idea
An investigator proposes a question, identifies a mentor if needed, and drafts a short concept in the Research Hub.
Admin review
The research office checks feasibility, data sources, statistical support and any budget or contract needs.
IRB
The protocol and consent documents are prepared and submitted. Projects that qualify use an umbrella IRB for registry studies.
Active → Publication
Data collection and analysis proceed under the approved protocol, ending in presentation and peer-reviewed publication.
Request access
The Research Hub is the department's internal workspace for project and IRB tracking, registries, grants, meetings and documentation. Access is limited to Saint Luke's and UMKC-affiliated personnel and is approved by the research leadership team — any one administrator can approve a request.
